Weaning Weight

Breeding the does for target kidding during the winter months provides the kids with a higher milk fat to nurse on which helps make faster weight gains. The winter months also provide dormancy among most of the internal and external parasites which summer kids suffer from.
We run our herd lean without any added supplements, grains, or feeds all year round besides required free choice loose goat mineral. This is done as a part of our breeding methods to really see how well the breed can thrive with very little aid, meaning our successes are truly deserved. We may use from time to time an insignificant amount of organic whole grain only as a behavioral training treat in the instance of moving or sorting the herd for health checks or changing pasture.
Trying to ensuring a tight kidding group in the months of January and February helps every kid to have the same chance of success. This is also timed so that they are weaned and browsing on spring forage. By eliminating as many variables, we hope to clearly see that any individual's success is due to genetic based performance.
Doelings to reach 40lbs and bucklings to reach 50lbs in 90 days is very respectable for our farm considering that we thrifty with their feed. Reaching this target is easy to say that they may become good contenders as future breeders. There is a final assessment of each kid's success at 5 months old.
